Pick your team (PYT) break

A PYT break lets buyers pick exactly which team they want. The operator prices each team based on its hit potential — the Chiefs cost more than the Jets. The format that lets a buyer bet on their favorite.

How it works

  1. Operator picks a product and ranks the teams by expected hit value.
  2. Each team is priced individually. Top-tier teams (big stars, lots of rookies) cost 3-10x bottom-tier teams.
  3. Buyers select the team they want and pay that team's price.
  4. Spots fill in any order. The operator can run multiple boxes if top teams sell out of one.
  5. The box is ripped. Each card's team routes to that team's buyer.

How to price PYT teams

The whole format lives or dies on pricing. Here is the method most Whatnot breakers use:

  1. Research expected hit values. For NFL, Chiefs, Bengals, 49ers, Cowboys sit top-tier. Jets, Panthers, Giants sit bottom.
  2. Add up every team's price so it covers your total cost + margin.
  3. Steeper tiers (top team 10x the bottom) attract whales but risk unsold low-tier spots. Flatter tiers (3x) sell faster but leave money on the table from the top.
  4. Breakr's tiered-break tool pre-fills these with current market tiers for NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL.

PYT vs random team

PYT
Buyers pick a team. Teams are priced individually. Higher ARPU per show, slower to fill.
Random team
All spots cost the same. Teams drawn at random. Lower ARPU, faster fill, more suspense.

Many breakers run PYT for premium product (Panini National Treasures, Topps Dynasty) and random team for mid-tier product (Prizm, Chrome).

Operator workflow in Breakr

  1. Open /breaks, pick the PYT template for your league.
  2. Breakr pre-fills team tiers; adjust prices per your market research.
  3. Fill the spots on Whatnot. Sell top-tier teams first — they drive momentum.
  4. As each team sells, Breakr's scoreboard shows which teams are still available.
  5. At rip time, hits route to each team's buyer. Operator logs each hit; shoutout alert fires in OBS.

Common mistakes

  • Flat pricing. If every team costs the same, run random-team. PYT with flat pricing is random-team with extra friction.
  • Underpriced top tier. If Chiefs sells in 10 seconds, you left margin on the table. Raise the top-tier next show.
  • Overpriced bottom tier. If the Jets never sell, you cannot rip the box. Price the bottom tier at your cost floor.
  • No sell-the-rest hustle. If 3 teams are left after the top sells, run a mini-random on the stragglers.
