Random team break

The classic break format: every spot costs the same, every buyer gets a team drawn at random after the box is paid out. The simplest format to sell and the easiest format for a new buyer to understand.

How it works

  1. Operator picks a product (a box, a case, a pack set). Every team in the product's league gets one spot.
  2. Spots are listed at a flat price. 32 NFL teams, 32 spots. 30 NBA teams, 30 spots. 32 NHL teams, 32 spots. 30 MLB teams, 30 spots.
  3. Buyers purchase spots in any order.
  4. Once every spot is sold, the operator runs the randomizer on stream and each buyer is assigned a team.
  5. The box is ripped. Each card's team routes to that team's buyer. Hits ship after the show.

Why buyers like it

  • Cheap entry. Flat price means a $5-15 spot gets you in.
  • Suspense. You do not know which team you are getting until the draw.
  • Fair. Nobody picks first, nobody picks last — the draw is live.

Why operators run it

  • Simple to sell. One price, one listing per spot. No tier math.
  • Fast fill. Buyers do not deliberate on team selection — they just buy.
  • Repeatable. Same template every show. Breakr saves the team list for each league.

Variants

Random division
Instead of 32 teams you have 8 divisions. Each buyer gets a division (4 teams), lower spot count, higher per-spot price.
Random conference
Two spots, each gets one conference (16 teams in NFL). Pure 50/50 split.
Random pack
For Pokemon or TCG product: each buyer gets a random pack from the box. All the cards in that pack are theirs regardless of character.

How to randomize fair

Breakr's built-in randomizer runs a Fisher-Yates shuffle visible on stream, with a seed derived from the latest Whatnot sale timestamp. Every viewer sees the result at the same time. Export the draw log at close of show if any buyer asks.

Pricing a random team break

Flat per-spot price. Example for a Panini Prizm Football hobby box ($220 cost, 32 spots):

  • Box cost: $220
  • Whatnot platform fee (8%): ~$18 on $220 of sales
  • Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 × 32): ~$16
  • Shipping cost estimate ($5 × 32): ~$160
  • Total cost: ~$414
  • With 25% margin: $517 total → $16-17 per spot
