How to run a card break on Whatnot
The complete flow for a Whatnot card break — from planning a box to reconciling the ledger. Works for sports cards, Pokemon, Lorcana, One Piece, Magic. Format-neutral.
What a break is, in one line
A break is a live stream where viewers buy a share of a sealed product (a box, a case, a pack set), the product is ripped open on cam, and the hits route to each buyer according to the format.
Step by step
Plan the box
Pick the product. Panini Prizm Football hobby box, Pokemon 151 ETB, Lorcana booster box — whatever your audience will show up for. Decide the format up front; it changes the spot count and the pricing.
Price the spots
Add box cost + Whatnot platform fee (8%) + payment processing (2.9% + $0.30) + shipping. Divide across spots, add 15-30% margin. Breakr's break calculator does this live.
Build the break in Breakr
Open /breaks, hit New break, pick the format, enter the box and spot details. Breakr pre-fills team lists for the four major US sports leagues.
Fill the spots on Whatnot
Each spot becomes a Whatnot listing. For PYT, go in team-rank order and sell the chase spots first. For random-team, all spots are the same price so order does not matter.
Randomize on stream
For random-team or mystery breaks, Breakr's randomizer runs the draw live. The whole chat sees the result. Export the draw log in case anyone asks after.
Rip and log hits
Open the packs on cam. When a hit lands, log it in Breakr. The scoreboard updates on the OBS overlay and a hit alert plays. Buyer gets a shoutout.
Reconcile at close
Breakr's sales ledger shows every sale, fee, and net profit. Mark each spot shipped as you pack it. Export CSV for your records.
Common mistakes
- Pricing too tight. Add 15-30% margin to cover a bad box.
- Forgetting shipping on reward redemptions. If you run a rewards program, build the shipping cost into the point price of each item.
- Not randomizing on stream. Trust is the whole product. Draw live, every time.
