Fees

Whatnot fees explained

Every fee a Whatnot seller pays, in one place. Platform commission, payment processing, cancellation charge, and shipping. With real numbers from current rates and a calculator to run your own box.

The four fees

Platform commission
8% of each sale (common tier). High-volume sellers see as low as 5-6% on recent tier adjustments. Verify your tier in your Whatnot seller dashboard.
Payment processing
2.9% + $0.30 per order. US rate. Charged on the order total, including shipping. International rates differ.
Cancellation charge
$3 or 3% of the order, whichever is greater. Added in July 2026 for seller-initiated cancels Whatnot deems avoidable. Buyer-initiated cancels through Whatnot are exempt.
Shipping
Not a Whatnot fee, but a real cost. Buyer-paid by default; seller-paid if you turn on free-shipping (discovery boost: 5-7x first-time buyers per Whatnot's 2023 data).

Worked example: $220 Prizm Football hobby, 32 spots

Say you run a random-team break on a Panini Prizm Football hobby box ($220 cost, 32 spots, $5 shipping each). You price each spot at $17.

  • Gross revenue: $17 × 32 = $544
  • Platform commission (8%): $43.52
  • Payment processing (2.9% × $544 + $0.30 × 32): $15.78 + $9.60 = $25.38
  • Total fees: $68.90
  • Box cost: $220
  • Shipping ($5 × 32): $160
  • Net profit: $544 − $68.90 − $220 − $160 = $95.10
  • Effective margin: 17.5%

Interactive run: open the break pricing calculator, tap the Prizm Football preset, change the margin to see the per-spot price adjust.

Where sellers lose money without noticing

  • Underestimating shipping. A $5 flat on a bulky hobby box hits $8-12 after a few returns. Add 20% to your shipping estimate.
  • Payment processing on shipping. The 2.9% applies to the order total, not just the item. A $17 spot with $5 shipping gets charged processing on $22.
  • Cancellation charges on no-shows. A buyer who ghosts and you cancel on their behalf trips the $3 fee. Ask them to cancel through Whatnot's own cancel flow instead — buyer-initiated is exempt.
  • Free shipping on tight margins. The 5-7x discovery boost is real but you absorb $5-10 per order. Only turn it on when the volume math works.

How to lower what you pay

  1. Qualify for a lower tier. Whatnot cut fees for high-volume sellers in 2026. 50+ orders and $1k+ lifetime revenue is the typical floor.
  2. Reduce cancels. Keep your cancel rate under 2-3%. The $3 fee stacks, and the rating hit affects Rewards Club eligibility.
  3. Use buyer-initiated cancels. DM the buyer, ask them to cancel through Whatnot's own cancel link. Zero fee.
  4. Combined-order shipping. Whatnot bundles orders from the same buyer. One shipping label, one $0.30 flat fee.
  5. Reserve-listing fulfillment for rewards. See our reserved-listing pattern — fulfill viewer rewards through Whatnot's own order flow instead of a separate shipping label.

Run your own numbers
